It's hard to explain... I don't understand the details, myself.
But I was born with a unique power that makes my body work similar to the magic technology in my world... and someone was able to create a mechanism to control my power, the same as any device.
Rita's an expert on those, however, so she changed how it worked.
To put it simply, yes. The cores were made from living beings... and their energy use created an imbalance in the environment, hurting the world at large...
... I'm guessing that was a side effect people didn't know about when they put it into production. Or, I'd hope, but people will do horrible things for convenience.
