Is it intruding if you’re not supposed to know they’re there? I’m more interested in why you could actually see them.

No, there has to be more to it, or else more people would have noticed... So then, maybe something that happened to us in the elevator was the key?

We couldn’t use the elevator at all, until the very point you and Shinobu were able to. Either you weren’t supposed to and saw something you weren’t meant to, or they were laying a trail of breadcrumbs.
